Genevieve Cantin clinches Women’s 200m backstroke gold: Day three – 2012 Canadian Summer Nationals
Genevieve Cantin of Rouge Et Or clinched gold medal of the Women’s 200m backstroke on third day of the 2012 Canadian Summer Nationals at the Edmonton Kinsmen Sport Centre in Edmonton on Saturday, July 21.
Cantin, who qualified into the final round as second fastest swimmer, lived up to the hopes of her supporters by occupying gold medal of the distant backstroke discipline. With her astonishing pace, she smothered her challengers in the four-lap event and
tapped the wall for the title.
Her alluring efforts remained 0.66 seconds ahead of her following swimmer as she hit the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 11.34 seconds.
The champion was chased by Dominique Bouchard of Titans, who finished her swim in second best place by posting a time of 2 minutes and 12.00 seconds.
Third finest spot of the discipline was obtained by Lauren Lavigna of VAND, who stayed one and a half body length slower from her foregoing finisher and tapped the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 13.24 seconds.
Subsequently, Lavigna was followed by Sydney Pickrem of Neptune, who suffered a loss of 1.50 seconds from her former finisher and transpired on the finishing end as fourth best finisher with an effort of 2 minutes and 14.74 seconds.
The 15-year-old Pickrem was chased by Brooklynn Snodgrass of CASC, who was only 0.25 seconds behind and earned fifth position of the race by touching the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 14.99 seconds.
Snodgrass was traced by Taylor Moore of Go Kingfish, who stayed 1.12 seconds away from her preceding swimmer and hit the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 16.11 seconds for sixth position.
Seventh position of the race was secured by Stefan Schmidt of Island Swimming, who stayed just two strokes apart and clocked a timing of 2 minutes and 16.48 seconds.
Schmidt was chased by Cynthia Pammett of Trent, who remained only 0.04 seconds away and ended eighth by producing a time of 2 minutes and 16.52 seconds.
Furthermore, Cantin was contented with her national gold claiming effort in the distant backstroke event.
