Gennady Golovkin fight suspected December 11
Though it remains unofficial, locker room whispers and a listing on boxrec.com point to a December 11 contest between WBA “regular” champ Gennady Golovkin and Marco Antonio Rubio in Mexico City.
Golovkin, 28, has been the object of considerable controversy since going pro in 2006, which has merely expounded in light of an August battle with Milton Nunez where he was awarded the interim WBA middleweight title.
The controversy has to do with Golovkin wanting to win the WBA middleweight title and the highly complicated nature of the WBA title classifications.
Following a fight with middleweight challenger Giovanni Lorenzo, Felix Sturm, the “regular” WBA middleweight champion, became “super” champion, vacating his regular title. To determine a new regular champion, the WBA determined to pit WBA ranked No.1 Hassan
N’Dam N’Jikam against No.2 Avtandil Khurtsidze. However, this move was loudly contested by Golovkin, as he was already the interim titleholder and therefore considered himself mandatory challenger for the “regular” title.
After much ado Golovkin (19-0, 16 KOs) was finally awarded the “regular” WBA middleweight title, though many in the boxing world remain disenchanted with the arbitrariness of the WBA’s decision and the fact that Golovkin didn’t have to fight for the title
(he isn’t a linear champion).
Despite the chaos, Golovkin remains one of the most controversial and feared prospects in professional boxing. His name is sounded with a ring of respect among the boxing community, as he boasts amateur victories over the likes of super middleweight contender
Andre Dirrell and current IBF champ Lucian Bute.
Golovkin recently called out WBA “super” champion Felix Sturm, a challenge many think Sturm will avoid for fear of being demolished.
Golovkin's manager, Oleg Hermann, said: "It is a very simple question: Can Felix Sturm hold his title with pride? We think he knows that his title is only of its full value if he fights against Gennady, the WBA's world champion. There is nothing that could
prevent the bout between Gennady and Felix, since they both are promoting themselves. It is now time to find out if the WBA's super champ is really undefeatable, like he says he is."
At any rate, the bout would be immensely popular in Europe since both fighters are European superstars and marketable brands.
