For a couple weeks now I have been trying to get my APBT to not pull on the leash by stopping and turning the opposite way when he pulls, but it doesn't seem to be working. He will do good and then go back to pull 5 minutes later. Do you think a gentle leader is ok for him or should I try something else? I could use any advise right about now....thanks!

  1. The gentle leader is worth a shot.  But remember, it is a training tool and should be used in conjunction with training, so when the dog is not pulling, you need to reinforce that behavior with praise and treats.  Otherwise, you will end up having to put it on for the rest of his life to get him not to pull, and the ultimate goal is a dog that walks on a loose leash with a regular collar.  Do also look at the Easy Walk Harness.  I prefer it to the Gentle Leader because it is easier for most dogs to adjust to and has less potential of causing the dog discomfort.

  2. I wish I had a a american pit bull terrier.

  3. Some people prefer haltis.  I prefer a prong collar for my APBTs.

Fitted and placed correctly, they are extremelly effective, and cause no tracheal damage.

  4. Absolutely. I use haltis when I lead train my rescues, and I have never had anything less than success. APBT's are incredibly intelligent, but they won't do something unless they understand and see the point in it.

I too tried the walk the other way tactic, but the majority of my pits would rather turn me back around. the haltis completely eliminated their pulling, and I will never again turn to a lesser method.

  5. ya there perfict for each othet

  6. I dislike gentle leaders for the simple fact that a dog that jerks to suddenly can get whiplash, also especially with a breed like the apbt  lot of dumb people think it's a muzzle and that certainly doesn't help anything.

Also most dogs HATE wearing it and some will NEVER grow to accept having those things around their face most dogs accept muzzles better than gentle leader in my experience and opinion.

  7. The gentle leader and the Halti are the same idea. Both work well. If you are still having trouble try actual training methods like every time he pulls you walk the other way so he gets further from where he wants to go and you are in charge.

You can also try a Gentle Walker. It is made by the Premire and is a harness like correction. I use it for all of my Pit rescues.
