Question:

Genuine Chrysler Extended Warranty vs Fidelity Warranty Services Warranty, differences?

Long story short...today I had a repair done that my Dodge Dealership said was covered under my 3yr 36k warranty...but would not have been under my 7yr 100k warranty with Fidelity Warranty Services. However, it WOULD have been covered under a 7yr 100k Chrysler Warranty.

What confused me is I bought the car at Dodge...and they SHOVED the Fidelity Services extended warranty down my throat and never even mentioned a chrysler warranty.

How does this make any sense? What are the differences between the two?

  1. Aftermarket service warranties are about worthless, and will try hard to deny any responsibility for coverage. They are mostly like limited partnerships, they make money for the seller and provide a loss for the buyer. IMO

  2. Aftermarket warranties are a huge moneymaker for the dealerships. They are also, for the most part, useless. The fine print "exceptions" are what keep the company from paying out for repairs that should be covered. Genuine Chrysler is backed by the manufacturer. The other is strictly a company that deals with selling an automotive "insurance policy" as it were and have no affiliation with a company to back up it's claims.

  3. That happened to me> They make more money>See if they will change it over to Chrysler or call Chrysler and complain 1800-992-1997

  4. The difference is.... the Chrysler warranty comes with your car - no additional charge, and they have to pay for any warranty repairs. The Fidelity Services warranty you paid a lot extra for, which means they already have some of your money in their pocket to cover repair costs. I've told many people this... NEVER buy an extended warranty, it's money down the drain (or in other peoples' pockets!)

  5. eeek, I've heard horrible things about 3rd party warranty companies.  Everything from them dissapearing off the face of the earth leaving you without any coverage (or recourse), to shoddy repairs.  The Chrysler warranties are in fact from Chrysler.  I just bought a 2008 Gr. Caravan and added a lifetime wrap warranty (basically bumper to bumper lifetime warranty).  The Chrysler warranty was $2800 from www.chryslerservicecontracts.com.  They are a dealership (I think in Michigan, but not sure) and their finance department (the dept. in all dealerships that sells the warranties) will sell a warranty to you whether you bought your car from them or not.  Just FYI, the finance guys make money off of the sale of the warranty...your guy probably pushed that contract on you because it gives him the best commission / kick back.

Just wanted to add to the fellow who said not to buy any warranty.  Most 2008 Chryslers do come with a lifetime power train (engine / transmission) warranty, and 3 yr bumper to bumper.  However, if you've bought yourself a fully loaded Chrysler (video screens, my gig, power doors, etc) then you absolutely should buy an extended warranty if you plan to keep the car past the  3 year point.  I don't know about you, but I'd much rather pay $2800 for the peace of mind in knowing that if any of those ridiculously expensive electronics goes bad, Chrysler will fix it (and give me a rental car while they do it:-) for the entire time that I own that car.
