Question:

Geo Tracker- Converting a standard to an automatic?

For some time now, I've been looking for one of those little Geo Trackers for the fuel efficiency and I just like the look of them. Every time I find one for sale, it's a standard. Most people can successfully drive a vehicle with a standard transmission (with the exception of myself). I have a little bit of automotive know-how and would be willing to try to change one over if it's not too difficult. I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks for your time.

  1. It's more money and time than it's worth. You would be better off selling the car and buying another one.

  2. You get better mpg for most cars with the standard (stick shift) transmission.  And if you want a Tracker to save money on gas, any savings will be wasted in replacing the trans (which may run you $500-1000 or more)

You'd have to replace the trans itself, the floor (where the stick shift lever comes through, change the dash to add a manual trans gear lever,  possibly change the flyweel or bellhousing, and who knows what else.

And one more thing: if you're finding that 95% of the Trackers are stick shift, you'll have a really hard time finding a used automatic transmission anywhere.  You may have to buy a new/rebuilt one (over $1000 usually).
