Geoff Ogilvy criticizes Fred Couples decision of picking Tiger Woods for the President’s Cup team
Geoff Ogilvy, the shining Australian golfer has come out with scathing criticism over Fred Couples decision to induct Tiger Woods in the US team months before the event. Ogilvy, who is also part of the International team in the upcoming event, regarded Couples’
decision as too early and de-motivating for the young players who have done well on the tour in the current season.
"You can't ever say that picking Tiger Woods is a bad selection, but the way he picked him ... " Ogilvy said. "I don't agree with the way he picked him, announcing it months early, basically telling the guys who are on the fringe of the U.S. team there's
really only going to be one pick.”
The event is schedule in November and Couples decided to pick Woods almost three months before hand, severely demoralizing the young players eager to play in the coveted event. Ogilvy regarded one such player as Keegan Bradley who has already won twice on
the tour this year, including the PGA Championship in Atlanta. Bradley was not able to get a place in the event and Ogilvy’s remarks are quite justified particularly keeping in view Bradley’s recent win at the PGA Grand Slam in Bermuda.
"I'm not going to stand up and say Tiger is a horrible pick, but I'm going to say it's very disappointing that Keegan Bradley doesn't get to play. That's where I'm at with it." Ogilvy added.
Couples picked up Woods and FedExCup Playoff champion Bill Haas for the two remaining berths in the event and has been facing severe criticism over his decision to select Woods primarily on account of his personal relations with the former world number one.
Greg Norman, Captain of the International team, has time and again criticized Couples decision and went over to the extent of claiming Woods will never be able to win another major let alone overtaking Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18 major titles.
Woods returned to mainstream golf at the Frys.com Open after a break of several weeks, only to finish well behind the lead. He is now accompanied by his new caddie Joe Lacava on the bag who was a long time caddie of Dustin Johnson. Struggling with his deteriorated
swing and recurring injuries, Woods has not won a title for the last two years. He has now fallen out of the top-50 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) for the first time in last 15 years and is now facing a serious threat of going back to the qualifying
school to qualify for the events in the next season.
Norman, on the other hand, picked Robert Allenby and Aaron Baddeley as two of his personal choices and seems confident of taking over the American team in the upcoming event.
