Geoff Huegill dominates Men’s 50m butterfly race: 2011 FINA World Cup, Berlin
Seven-time Commonwealth gold medallist, Geoff Huegill grabbed the attention of Berlin’s crowd due to his animated splash in butterfly swimming at the 2011 FINA World Cup series in Germany. The fourth round of the seven stop World Series was held from October
22-23. The session of the competition conducted two thrilling races, involving Men’s 50m butterfly and 1500m freestyle.
In the first splash, Australia’s veteran and Olympic medallist, Geoff Huegill beat two other strong rivals including six-time European champion, Steffen Deibler of Germany and Summer Universiade champion, Evgeny Korotyshkin of Russia by thrashing the finishing
wall in a mouth shattering time of 22.67 seconds. Deibler was placed at second spot in a time of 22.89 seconds and Korotyshkin settled for bronze title with a mark of 22.95 seconds.
In the meantime, the fourth place honours went to United States’ Tyler McGill in a time of 23.10 seconds and Belgian’s Francois Heersbrandt claimed fifth position by posting a time of 23.22 seconds. Moreover, Andrii Govorov of Ukraine earned sixth place
honours by submitting a time of 23.29 seconds and Milorad Cavic of Serbia claimed seventh place by posting a mark of 23.34 seconds. Finally, Antony James of Great Britain finished eighth in a time of 23.63 seconds.
Double European gold medallist, Sebastien Rouault of France picked gold medal in the Men’s 1500m freestyle by hitting the finishing wall in a fastest time of 14 minutes and 48.31 seconds. Sebastien won two gold medals in 800m and 1500m freestyle events at
the 2010 European Championships, in Budapest. In addition, he won a gold medal in 1500m freestyle at the 2005 Mediterranean Games, in Almeria.
Meanwhile, Sergii Frolov of Ukraine claimed silver medal by posting a time of 14 minutes and 50.15 seconds and Colombia’s Manuel Schwarz settled for bronze title with a mark of 15 minutes and 03.18 seconds. Additionally, Denmark’s Lie Nielsen Anders thrashed
out Colombia’s Joel AX by touching the finishing wall in an impressive time of 15 minutes and 03.86 seconds to earn fourth place honours. Finally, Joel was placed at fifth spot in a time of 15 minutes and 23.10 seconds.
The wonderful swimming efforts of both, Geoff Huegill and Sebastien Rouault mesmerised the arena, while the top three players were awarded medals along with a cash prizes after the session’s completion.
The 2011 FINA World Cup series is a great chance for young guns of Germany, Australia, Sweden, Ukraine and Great Britain to prepare hard for their upcoming meets of competitive swimming.
