Geoff Huegill fails to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games – Swimming News
Two-time Olympic Games medallist and Australian butterfly expert, Geoff Huegill has failed to book his spot in the Australian team, which will compete at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Huegill was considered a strong contender for the 100m butterfly at the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships, a tournament that acts as the Selection Trials for the Australian swimmers for the upcoming 2012 London Games.
The Australian veteran failed to materialise in the top two finishers and lost his London dream by finishing fifth in the event. He went pretty strong in the initial lap of the 100m discipline but his struggle was overpowered by his younger teammates, who
displayed their ruthless aggression in the final 50 metres to secure podium.
The title of the event was obtained by Christopher Wright, who clocked 51.67 seconds. He was followed by Jayden Hadler and Matt Targett, who ended second and third with efforts of 52.09 and 52.24 second, respectively.
Fourth spot was earned by Nick D’Arcy, who clocked a time of 52.47 seconds while Huegill settled as the fifth fastest swimmer and ended his swim with an effort of 52.50 seconds.
“The perfect end to the fairytale was getting here this week and at least doing what was required to step up and race. It would have been quite easy to walk away at Delhi but I know we would have got to this week and I would have still been scratching my
head saying, 'If only I tried,” said Huegill.
“I'm going to sit down with my family and we're going to speak about the next part of the journey, and we'll make our call when the time is right,” he added.
The 33-year-old Huegill retired from competitive swimming in 2006 but made a comeback to his sport in 2008. With his alluring effort, he stunned the arena by winning gold medal of the 100m butterfly at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. He won three medals
at the Delhi Games including two gold medals and one silver medal.
Nevertheless, Huegill, who is the three-time world champion, would not be able to represent Australia in his main events at the forthcoming Olympic Games.
