Geoff Lawson calls for a complete overhaul of Cricket Australia
Former Australian Test bowler, Geoff Lawson, has called for a complete overhaul of Cricket Australia.
“We’ve got to rebuild and if you don’t perform then catch you later, I’m talking about selectors, coaches everybody,” Lawson stated at a corporate luncheon of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Queensland-c834 Cricket at Brisbane on Thursday.
The former pace-man slammed the country’s cricket governing body for giving scant attention to cricketing fundamentals. He also lambasted Australian captain Ricky Ponting for showing poor leadership that led to Australia’s embarrassing 3-1 Ashes loss against
England.
“It’s what I call a top-down disintegration; it’s started at the top and filtered through,” Lawson stated.
He demanded that the senior authorities and officials ‘draw a line’ to ensure that the team does not slump further from its current rankings.
The 46-year-old blamed the national selection panel for inflicting ‘confusion’ in the Australian camp. Lawson stressed that the state players are more confused than the national players, saying that it was particularly worrying as the domestic players would
be the ‘potential pool’ of the national team.
The former Pakistan’s national team coach recalled a conversation with the players he had before a domestic match, last year. He claims that the players had no idea what was expected of them.
“They (players) have no idea what the selectors want from the players... there is a lot of confusion out there,” he admitted.
The 46-year-old also urged Ponting to step down from captaincy that a ‘new era’ could be kicked off. He stated that even if Australia manages to defend their fourth consecutive World Cup in the sub-continent, Ponting should step down regardless.
