Geoff Lawson slams Ricky Ponting and senior CA officials
Former Australia player Geoff Lawson has slammed senior officials of Cricket http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 and skipper Ricky Ponting for their dismal show in the recently concluded 2010-11 Ashes series and said it was time to start a new era.
The former fast bowler admitted that Ponting was one of the best cricketers ever produced by Australia but his time was up and the country should look ahead in order to regain their number one rank in Test cricket.
Australia lost the Ashes at home to England for the first time in 24 years and Ponting faced a lot of criticism for that. The veteran batsman was below par in the series and failed to score runs for his team.
Lawson stated, “We got beaten by an innings three times (in the Ashes), that is the worst record in the history of Australian cricket, can we take a little bit of notice of our first class competition please, or give it a little bit more respect?”
Prior to the Ashes, the Kangaroos also lost a two-match Test series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 in England.
However, Australia have been good in the limited-over format of the game as they defeated http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c749 by 6-1 in the recently concluded One Day International series. This victory came without Ponting, who was nursing a finger injury he sustained during the Ashes.
This victory has given hopes to the Australian fans that the team will be able to defend their title in the Subcontinent. However, Lawson said that even a World Cup win should not be enough to save Ponting and the veteran batsman should be sidelined after
the mega event.
Lawson’s criticism was not only limited to Ponting as he slammed the selectors and senior officials of Cricket Australia. He said that continuous changes in the team and some structural changes in domestic cricket have ruined the chances of Australia to
win Test matches.
The former fast bowler also criticised the Big Bash tournament and said that it was just a move to earn money rather than improving cricket in the country.
