Geoff Ogilvy aiming some improvement at the British Open
The Australian Geoff Ogilvy will return to action for the first time, since he missed the cut in the US Open. He will tee off at the Open Championship, scheduled to start from July 19, 2012.
Ogilvy, the winner of the 2006 US Open, now looks determined to discover the form that can help him improve his track record in the third major event of the year.
He has a total of nine British Open appearances to his name. However, he missed the cut at the major tournament seven times.
According to Ogilvy, he definitely has the chance to sit atop the leaderboard this year because of his experience at the venue, the Royal Lytham and St Anne's Golf Club.
"It's weird to me, because I played a lot of amateur golf around links courses and played really well," he said. "I feel like I should play well on links courses. Maybe it's no excuses, time to go do it, I suppose".
According to Ogilvy’s stats on the PGA Tour this year, he does not have a single top-10 finish and managed to record only six top-25 finishes in the 14 starts that he has made so far.
His best finish of the season came in The Players Championship, when he tied for the 12th position.
Therefore, the golf commentators do not look very optimistic about him getting the form back that can help him contend strongly in the Open Championship.
On the other hand, Ogilvy is confident to leave a good impression at this year’s event, as he thinks that the four-week rest will give him some physical strength and confidence.
"The game's in place and I'm pretty enthusiastic about the game and pretty fired up but I think sometimes when you take a few weeks off you can gain that extra level of whatever that thing is in your head when you're playing well, that relaxed confidence,"
he said.
Apart from talking about his prospects of making a good run at Royal Lytham, he commented about Tiger Woods’ form by saying that he is getting better each day and can be a great threat to his rivals in the upcoming major championships.
