Geoff Ogilvy hoping to make a hat-rick in Hawaii
The Australian golfer Geoff Ogilvy who has won the Tournament of Champions two times already is hoping to win it for the third time this weekend. The PGA Tour’s season opening event will take place this weekend at the Kapalua Plantation Course in Hawaii.
With all the golfers having an intense year of golf, all the players including the defending champion Ogilvy are hoping to start 2011 on a good note. And the happy start could be nothing more than winning the first event of the 2011 PGA tour which has a purse
of $5.6.
“Obviously it's been a place that's been good to me the last few years," said Ogilvy. "Being here before, winning last two years; it's a place you always want to come. It's one of the nicest venues all year, if not the nicest probably. It's a nice little
treat, reward for winning a tournament the year before and a little bit of a head start on everyone else."
Since Geoff won the event last year, he will appear in what was previously called the SBS Championship. In 2010, Geoff won by beating Rory Sabbatini by just a single stroke. Previously, only the American Gene Littler won the event thrice in 1957 and Geoff’s
compatriot Stuart Appleby achieved the same in 2006.
Geoff said that he has been aware of the fact that a fellow Australian has won the event three times so he should be able to do it. The player also acknowledged that last year was the first time he won an event and winning in the third time would be a bonus.
Geoff thinks that the international players have an upper hand than the American golfers for the season opening event. The American golfers took a break from competitive golfer early November as compared the Australian player who participated in tournament
in November and December. Also, the South African players will have an advantage as well since they played into late December. Since practice matters a lot, the form of the golfers significantly affects their game.
However, even though they haven’t played competitively, doesn’t mean they didn’t win at all. The two-time winner Geoff will face some tough competition from the amazing stars such as Matt Kuchar or Jim Furyk. Winning the Australia Open and attaining a second
place finish at the Australian PGA Championship; Geoff is doing well and is now hoping to make a hat-trick in Hawaii this weekend.
