Geoff Ogilvy says Tiger Woods is back on the winning ways, can reclaim the number one spot soon
The 2006 US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy is optimistic about Tiger Woods’ future and said that one should not be surprised with his return to the winning ways this year.
Ogilvy was talking to the media while packing his bags to travel to Royal Lytham and St Anne's Golf Club, in England, where he is scheduled to make his 10th appearance in the British Open.
He said that the old Tiger Woods has once again emerged on the golf scene and is threatening his opponents, especially in the major championships.
According to him, Woods’ fall during the US Open last month cannot be considered as the end of the world. In fact, it was a sign of his unpredictability on the PGA Tour this year.
He is winning tournaments, missing cuts, falling down during the tournaments and picking up pace to outshine his opponents.
Every aspect of the game has been found in his performances in the past few months. Therefore, it is difficult to rate him for any event to come in the near future.
"Physically, when you watch him play and the way he carries himself on the golf course he does look the intimidating presence, if you like, he always did," Ogilvy said. "He looks very impressive. He looks like the old Tiger Woods".
He also stated that Woods swing has changed greatly after the injury issues that he suffered in 2009. Meanwhile, the new technique cannot stop him to become the best player in the world once again.
Right before his victory in the Chevron World Challenge last year, he was listed outside the top-50 in the Official World Golf Rankings. That was a time when the golf critics started believing that his career had come to an end.
However, Woods proved them all wrong and has jumped to the fourth place, threatening the European players on top of the OWGR.
"Wow, he's pretty close to the best player in the world at the moment," Ogilvy said.
Woods is currently taking a week off prior to the start of the third major event of the year, scheduled to start from July 19, 2012.
