Geoff Willis, Aldo Costa to join Mercedes GP team as technical heads – Formula 1 news
Mercedes GP team principal Ross Brawn recently confirmed that they have signed Aldo Costa and Geoff Willis for the team’s technical department.
Costa resigned from his role at Ferrari in May 2011 and will be working as the engineering director for the Brackley-based outfit, assuming his role from the beginning of December 2011.
Willis, after his recent departure from Hispania Racing Team, will be joining Mercedes as technical director with effect from October 27, 2011.
Ross Brawn, who is Mercedes GP team principal, believes that their addition to the team’s technical department will bring remarkable success as both of them are highly talented and skilled technicians and bring with them many years of experience.
“I am delighted to announce that Aldo Costa and Geoff Willis will be joining the team,” Brawn said. “Geoff is a highly respected engineer with over twenty years of Formula 1 experience, and we look forward to his arrival next month.”
Both Costa and Willis are very happy to have joined Mercedes. They believe that with someone like Bob Bell as their head who has the approach and calibre to achieve winning results for the team, they be able to produce the kind of results that they want.
The Mercedes team is currently looking to build upon its infrastructure and revamping its technology for which it needs competent people. It aims to compete with big and more technologically advanced teams like Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren and in doing
so, it needs to strengthen its technical support.
By hiring Costa and Willis, the team has proven that it is going in the right direction.
Brawn added, “To add people you have to have the structure you need, and obviously one of the big things for the team is Bob Bell joining us. The infrastructure has to be in place before you can start adding numbers. And I think we've strengthened the structure.”
Let’s see how the team fares with the recent addition of Costa and Willis to the team in the next 2012 season.
