Geoffrey Boycott, the former English cricketer, has come out in support of Jonny Bairstow and urged the selectors to persist with the youngster, despite his failures in the on-going Test series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760.
The 22-year-old is considered to be one of the most talented young batsmen in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Yorkshire-c867 made his way to international cricket last year,
when he was drafted in the limited-overs squad to take on http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 at home.
In his short first-class career, Bairstow has already scored five hundreds and 23 half-centuries. The injury of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RS-Bopara-c2373 earlier in the season convinced the English selectors to give an opportunity to the young right-handed batsman against West Indies.
In the two Test matches played so far at Lord’s and Trent Bridge, the middle-order batsman has scored only 20 runs. Some former cricketers are asking for his axing as they feel that Bairstow does not have the ability to cope with the short balls.
However, Boycott, who is one of the best opening batsmen produced by the country, strongly believes that Bairstow has the potential to become a top international player. Boycott expressed that the Caribbean team, especially http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KAJ-Roach-c1758, have bowled well
against the youngster.
He expressed, “I don’t think Jonny has a weakness against the short ball. That was a wonderful spell of bowling because Roach was quick, aggressive, hostile and nasty. There are times when you have to give credit to the bowler.”
The former opener is confident about a bright future for the young Yorkshire cricketer. Boycott also praised the performance of English selectors and feels that their consistency has played a major role in England’s success in recent years.
“Jonny is very talented, he’s got star quality and I think he’s going to be fine. He’ll have his ups and downs, like anybody else, and he’s not the sort to get ahead of himself. They stuck with young Broad when he had a sticky patch, and they stuck with
Bell when he had a sticky period last winter,” Boycott said.
