This year’s ING New York City Marathon, a running event which is regarded as an IAAF Gold Label Road Race, is to take place on Sunday, November 6, 2011. The meet will witness a robust Kenyan contingent comprised of this year’s Boston Marathon winners, Geoffrey
Mutai and his countrywoman, Caroline Kilel along with this year’s Virgin London Marathon winner, Mary Keitany, taking on the equally formidable Ethiopian squad led by emphatic runner, Tsegaye Kebede. Accompanying him on the run will be Galina Bogomolova and
Swedish runner, Isabellah Andersson.
Runners who have already confirmed their participation in the event, according to a prior announcement, are running legend, Gebre Gebremariam from Ethiopia, Meb Keflezighi – the champion of the 2009 race event, American runners Bobby Curtis and Ed Moran
and this year’s London Marathon winner, Emmanuel Mutai from Kenya.
Joining them on the field will be Juan Luis Barrios, an Olympian athlete from Mexico and Morocco’s Jaouad Gharib. Martin Lel, the two-time winner of the New York Marathon run had to withdraw his name from the potential field amid an injury.
On the Women’s side, as per the previous announcement, athletes who had confirmed their participation for the run comprised of defending champion and this year’s world champion, Edna Kiplagat from Kenya, Jen Rhines, New Zealand’s Olympic champion, Kim Smith,
United Kingdom’s Jo Pavey, Jessica Augusto and Ana Dulce Felix from Portugal. American runners, Lauren Fleshman and Molly Pritzo will also contest in the event.
Commenting upon the robust field of the event, Mary Wittenberg, CEO and President of the New York Road Runners said, “We have a star-studded international field for the ING New York City Marathon 2011 that brings together an incredible lineup of champions
from this year’s Boston, London and LA marathons.”
Cherishing some splendid players in the race, the CEO said, “What a treat to have Geoffrey Mutai, who ran the fastest time ever recorded for a marathon at Boston this year, in the race, along with Buzunesh Deba, this year’s LA winner, here again to compete
in the city she lives and trains in.”
Given the strength of the field for this year’s race, it seems that the CEO of the NYRR is well justified in sharing his excitement rather openly.
