my geography teacher has been sick for the past week so our progress in class is not up to the usual standard, so can any one help with these questions would be great.

1: i have picked jamaica and i cannot find a website containing Jamaica's natural vegetation

2:and also i am not able to find the answer to this question

i need to found a region that is at the some or near the some longitude as jamaica, but is at the opposite latitude

for example, if Jamaica's latitude was 30degrees S, this region must be at or near 30degrees N.

3:and this is the last question i am finding difficult to answer

the longitude that is 180 degrees away from jamaica, and state the longitude, and then state a region that has the opposite longitude

  1. Hi.  I'm a high school teacher in California. I most often teach biology to 14-17 year old students. However, one of my university degrees is in geography and so I have often ended up teaching that subject as well. AND I’ve been to Jamaica twice. It's a warm and wonderful and beautiful country, for sure.

Anyway, I think I can help you. And I find your question interesting.  AND I can't sleep.  So here I go...

    ~~

    Q1.  Jamaica's natural vegetation

A1.  Indigenous = "native to", or in the case of your question, "indigenous" is the same as "natural vegetation".  The word refers to plants (and other living things) that were NOT brought to the island to be farmed or for some other reason.

    A2.  Check these sites out:

    (1)  http://www.my-island-jamaica.com/plants_...

    (2)  http://www.my-island-jamaica.com/plants_...

    (3)  http://www.instituteofjamaica.org.jm/NHD... (<-- This site is very academic but *quite* thorough, too.)

    ~~

Q2.  First find Jamaica's coordinates (latitude and longitude).  Then substitute the opposite latitude to find whatever is there.

    A1.  Jamaica's coordinates:  18º 15´ NORTH latitude, 77º 30´W longitude

A2.  You need to know, therefore, what is near 18º 15´ SOUTH latitude, 77º 30´W longitude.

A3.  Since I don't know if you have an atlas, I tried to find a reasonably easy way for you to do this online but failed.  (I decided it was unreasonable to expect you to download/install google earth just to answer this one question.)  So I’m just going to give you the answer.

A3.  ---> 18º 15´S latitude, 77º 30´W longitude is in the Pacific Ocean way off the coast of the very very very northwestern tip of Chile--just a few miles from its border with Peru.

A4.  Arica, a small coastal town in that area, has coordinates of 18° 28'S lat, 70° 19'W long.  I think it's the closest place on land you're going to get to your target coords.

    ~~

Q3.  You need to find out where you would be if you went 180º (exactly halfway around the world) from Jamaica.

    A1.  180º - 77ºW longitude = 103ºE longitude

A2.  So, you need to find what is located at 18ºN latitude, 103ºE longitude.

A3.  After a glance into my trusty little school atlas, the one my students use, I can see that those coordinates are found on the continent of Asia, in the country of Laos.

A4.  Ban Mouang Cha, a Laotian city a little bit northeast of the capital city of Vientiane, in the far south of the country, is located at 18° 54'N, 103° 5'E.  That's about as close as I can get you at 3AM.

    ~~

This was a really good little project. The answer you have would, by the way, be close enough for full credit and a rave review in front of the whole class if I was grading this thing!

    Good luck.
