I just learned something.  When I went through school 65 years ago, there was never themes about geography.  I had to look it up to see what you were talking about.  Interesting.  Thanks for the chance to learn something new.  As an answer to your question, Hoover dam was built back in my days and it was for HUMAN/ENVIRONMENTAL reasons to control the flooding of the river and use the water for the benefit of those in Arizona, Nevada and California..
