is geology a difficult subject to major in?

Nothing is to difficult if you like doing it. Start off with general studies, then select a specific field like Vulcanism or the geology of other planets as your specialty. It can be fun.

Nothing is difficult as long as you are really into it.  If it's boring, why do it?

edit - most likely, and look at it as a lifetime investment in yourself.  A couple years now is nothing compared to the rest of your life.  Go for it!!!!!
