Geomagnetic reversal 2012?

I watched a show on tv last night pretty much saying the end of the world is going to be in 2012. Well I didn't think any thing of it until they talked about the geomagnetic reversal now I am totally afraid. Here are my questions #1 Do we know for a fact that this is going to happen in 2012? #2 If this does happen how will it effect us?

No one really knows what if anything will happen in 2012. There are multiple acient cultures that reference the date in Dec 2012. There is no real scientific information to back up these theories from the past. However, do not be arrogant enough to think that the end of the world is not possible. We are our own worst enemies and alot of our own actions are resulting in things that may very well contribute to our own demise. There are also natural disasters and threats from space.

We are no different and no better than any other age on earth where animals and such have been wiped out due to catasphoric events.

These are things beyond our control so my advice - life life to the fullest, due what you can to help preserve the earth and dont take life for granted!!!

The reversal isn't set for any particular time.  We're not even sure *why* it happens, let alone when.  The die-off of our current magnetic field will likely take several hundred years;  as it is now, the north magnetic pole "drifts" up to 40 miles per year (up from a dozen miles just a few decades ago), but when it will disappear is anyone's guess - but it probably won't be in the next few hundred years.

When it happens, solar radiation and cosmic particles, that we're currently protected from due to the magnetic field, will penetrate our atmosphere in much greater amounts - and, as a result, we'll see cancer rates go up, and radio equipment not last quite as long. It won't be catastrophic, but it will be bothersome, and the average life span will *probably* decline during this period.

That 2012 date is (I think) based on some Aztec (or Inca) calendar prophecy.  The shifting polarity is a theory that has a tiny bit of scientific evidence, though not 100% convincing, and could happen anytime in the next 500,000 years (maybe more).  I am reasonably certain that the television show you watched was not on the National Geographic channel or the Discovery channel.

So, as to your specific questions: #1 No, it is not going to happen in 2012.  #2 - if it does happen, the results are not at all clear, though our compasses would have to be re-calibrated.

First of all, this is not science--its a "urban legend."  There is not going to be a pole reversal in 2012. Even if there were,the effects would be disruptive for a while , but not to most people. Mostly a matter of reconfiguring satellite an navigation instruments.

This whole "2012" thing is built up out of some old Mayan legends by crackpots who actually take such myth s and folklore seriously.

Magnetic pole reversals do occur--but they take centuries.  They happen every few hundred thousand years and have been happening for as long as the Earth has existential.  There's some indication we may be headed into another one--but if you want to find out for sure, check back in 100-200 years. The process--if it's even happening--might be far enough along to be sure it's occurring.

the magnetic poles prob will reverse, might be soon, might not be... but it won't have a thing to do with any certain YEAR.... it will just happen, like it has before.....

Dude dont worry about it, really. It probably scared the c**p outta you cause it was all like 'the world is going to end' yadda yadda yadda. My sister watched something on it in school on how its actually going to be an age of Enlightenment, which I thought was pretty cool. the whole 2012 thing is based on the date on a Myan calender, apparently they could predict the world but not their societies own destruction. and yes its COMPLETE BS look at my source for a rundown on why its not true
