The reference to Hartshorne is pretty lacking.  All it does is tell you about his graduate thesis and advisors.  It was, however, the only online reference I could find that wasn't Wikipedia.

A note:  I did this because you didn't have any decent answers.  Finding all five of those links took me less than five minutes on Google.  This is something you should've been able to do yourself.  I'd strongly recommend you get comfortable with search engines.  They'll save you a lot of time in the future.
