explain how a median, and an altitude from the same vertex will be different segments in an scalene triangle. Use the words segment, perpendicular, and congruent in your explanation.

  1. The median of a triangle is defined as the line segment which extends from one vertex of a triangle to the midpoint of the opposite side.  In a scalene triangle, the altitude from the same vertex, being the segment with the shortest distance to and perpendicular to the opposite side, will not intersect the opposite side at the same point as the median.  Therefore, the median will not be congruent to the altitude, because they will be different lengths.
