Geometry question.....? ?

so i'm doing homework, and yes, i have figured out the answer, but apparantly it's not the right answer. so, it says, find the length of CD. C = -2, D = -5 1/4. I got the solution 7 1/4. my teacher gave us the answer sheet, and his answer is 3 1/4. what did i do wrong?

To find distance you have to subtract. -5 1/4 - (-2) = -5 1/4 + 2 = - 3 1/4

[minus a negative turns into plus]

And distance is always positive, so make it 3 1/4

You can just see and count, your line is just over 3 spaces long.  So how do you find this using an equation?

Find the length of the line by subtracting the smaller number (*) from the larger number (**).  This will work for any line.

-8 + 21.....21 - 8........13

u probably went from -2 to 5 1/4 instead of -2 to -5 1/4

Sorry no Idea but if you do it analytically you might get it

let c(-2,0)and d(-5 1/4,0) be the two points

i.e consider it in two dimension

Distance formula =((x2-x1)^2+(y2-y1)^2)^1/2

cd= ((-5 1/4+2)^2)^1/2  

    = 2 - 21/4

    = - 13/4

distance can't be negative

so CD=13/4=3 1/4

maybe it's the teacher that's wrong cuz -7 1/4 is the right answer, considering 5 and 7 1/4 are both negatives
