George Alexander nominated for Scottish Golf Volunteer award
George Alexander has been nominated for the Scottish Golf Volunteer of the Year award.
Alexander has been affiliated with Carrickvale Golf Club for more than 40 years as a match secretary. Moreover, he served as a team manager for the club in Edinburgh Evening News sponsored Dispatch Trophy and won thrice.
Apart from that, he played a crucial role in the European Men’s Club Trophy, where he flew to Portugal on his own expense to lead the club to sixth spot followed by a Scottish Club Championship victory at Fortrose & Rosemarkie in 2011.
Due to his dedication and utmost hard work, the Scot has been nominated for the award that will be given at the Scottish Golf Awards ceremony in Glasgow on 18 February, 2011.
Four more people have been nominated in the category. They include Gael Carlier from Kintore, Frank Anderson from Palacerigg, David Nathan from Isle of Seil and Evan Sutherland from Reay.
The purpose of such awards is to salute the people who put in a lot of hard work to promote golf as a sport in the region. The award is given to one person who is perceived as the greatest volunteer for his efforts.
Alexander is one of such volunteers who have spent a long time in promotion of the sport and is happy for the recognition.
While speaking to the press, Alexander said, “I was totally taken by surprise when I received a phone call from the Scottish Golf Union to tell me I had made the short list. I think it was Allyn d**k and Dave Redmond who put me forward and just to make the
top five is pretty good.”
The member of Carrickvale further added that he was looking forward to the ceremony.
He quoted, “It is very nice and, no matter what happens, I am looking forward to going along to the awards night in Glasgow. It has been a great few years for the club and, for me at least, it would be the icing on the cake if I won this award.”
The Scottish Golf Union has been conducting the Scottish Golf Volunteer of the Year Award on annual basis and like every year, it has received a large number of entries. According to a record, the association received 15,000 applications in 2011, which shows
the amount of effort put by various people in golf.
