George Dockrell rues batting failures – Cricket News Update
Ireland’s U-19 cricket captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-Dockrell-c59135 blamed poor batting for his side’s failure to qualify for the knock-out stages of the ongoing Under-19 World Cup, in Australia.
"I think we have let ourselves down in all three games with our batting," said Dockrell while speaking to media after his side’s 14-run win over Nepal. "The bowling has been really positive but the batting lacked a bit. Hopefully, we can put that right in the Plate Championship," he added further.
Placed in Group A, alongside defending champions Australia, England and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 and 129 against Australia, losing both the matches by seven and six wickets respectively. Though they managed to win their third and last group stage game against minnows Nepal by 14 runs, the batting line-up once again failed to put up a competitive total on the board, piling up just 185 runs.
However, their bowling has been quite impressive, as the formidable batting line-ups of England and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 batsmen.
"The bowling has been exceptional," said Dockrell, who led the Irish attack with his left-arm off-spin, picking up five wickets at an impressive economy rate of 1.80 an over.
"With both England and Australia, it took them about 40 overs to chase down totals of 110 and 130 which was quite a credit to our spinners, fielding and the team generally,” he added further.
With one win in three games, Ireland finished the Group Stage at No. 3. The top two teams from every group qualify for the Super League quarterfinals while the two bottom teams progress to Plate Championship quarter-finals.
Dockrell said that he was relieved after his side managed a victory, going into the plat stage.
"To be able to beat them today and finish third in the group is a big thing going into the Plate Championship. It was a great relief," said the Irish skipper, who has an international experience of 30 ODIs and 17 T20 Internationals under his belt.
Ireland will next play http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harris-c61739 Oval, Brisbane, on August 20, 2012.
