size difference would favor Big George. Gene can be hurt, in the second Dempsey fight, he was lucky because of the long count incident. So could George knock him down and there will be no long count this time or could Gene outbox George like Chris Byrd outbox Jameel McKline or Roy Jones outbox John Ruiz? Which scenario is more likely to happen.

  1. That would be one h**l of a fight. Tunney was a lot smaller but a great boxer. Foreman was devastating against short guys but he had trouble with boxers. The longer this fight goes it could be better for Tunney. if Tunney makes it the distance it would be a close fight.

My guess is George but Tunney would have a shot at winning on points.

  2. Tunney Has No Chance.  12 Wow

  3. George Foreman would knock him out.

  4. This wouldn't be much of a fight.  Weight alone does not make or break a fighter.  It does make a difference if you have a great difference between two good fighters or two poor fighters.  Here you have two great fighters but just with difference styles.

It is possible that Tunney could outbox Forman but very unlikely.  People tend to think Forman was just a big dumb clumbsy robotic fighter because of the way he lost to Ali.  I have always maintained that, had he never lost to Ali, Forman would never have lost to Jimmy Young.  The ALi fight took more than just George's undefeated record.

Forman's not a dumb fighter.  He just fought a dumb fight against Ali.  I dont think he would have had the same problem with Tunney.  Tunney would not have enjoyed the same psychological edge that Ali created for himself.  Ali did his homework and beat George in the only way a post-prime Ali could.  It's similar to what Leonard did with Marvin Hagler.  Not in terms of the battle plan as much as getting inside Marvin's head.

Tunney could possibly last into the middle rounds.  Not many fighters have better foot work, while matching his work rate.  IOW, some have great foot work but get little done while demonstrating.  Tunney can do both.  Still, it's not likely that he would go very far in the fight without getting caught a few times by Forman.  Like I said,  Ali created untangible advantages for himself that Tunney would not have been able to duplicate.  He would not fight the dumb fight he did against Ali.

    Forman by KO in 6

  5. When you compare their weights and the power.....Foreman would win this fight, Foreman hit A LOT harder than dempsey and Foreman was mean as h**l....while I respect Tunney's legendary defense I seriously doubt that it would be enough to stop big george. and if he ever got caught flush by Foreman's right hand the fight would be over for Tunney.

  6. Thumbs up to ElmerFudstien and James, I cannot improve on their answers, well done gentlemen.  I agree, Forman takes this one.

  7. George would knock him out quickly,................................... and then he would try and sell him one of his grillers.

Why did the monkey put a meat chop on his head?

He thought he was a griller.

  8. I like Foreman decision.  I think Gene had enough skill to avoid a KO, but at the cost of scoring.  I could see Tunney rallying a bit later on, but not enough to put a decision in doubt.  You have to factor better health and training methods that would make Gene 6'2" to 6'3" and 20 pounds heavier.

  9. George Destroyed Frazier.  Frazier And Tunney Would Be A Fairly Even Fight.  George Destroys Tunney.  Get The Logic.  No Brainer.  Elmer Bite Me

  10. At one point I would have picked Tunney to defeat Foreman (though not by ko), because of his great defense and overall skill. Tunney was arguably the best scientific boxer the heavyweight division has ever seen, and he always entered the ring prepared. Back then, I saw him being able to weather the early storm from Foreman and come back to win by UD.

But I have since come to realize that Foreman was not the big and clumsy slugger I once considered him to be. He had great footwork and was very good at cutting off the ring. The reason he lost to Ali is that he knocked himself out. Ali stood up against the ropes and took a beating while shouting insults into Georges ear from time to time. Foreman got tired and Ali was able to knock him down. Young Foreman lost because he didn't pace himself. This was not a prime Foreman.

I see a prime Foreman overwhelm and batter Tunney to win by crushing ko in the early rounds. Tunney was no Ali when it came to speed and Foreman would have little trouble cutting off the ring and corner Tunney. Tunney had heart, chin and skill and would probably survive a few rounds, but not long enough to tire Foreman I believe.

George Foreman by ko rd 5.

Its good to see someone give credit to Gene Tunney though! I am a big fan of his, and it surprises me that he is underrated and overlooked by so many. I rank him in the top 10 of the all-time heavyweights. A great fighter.
