George Groves excited for being appreciated by Oscar de la Hoya – Boxing News
Not many fighters get the honour of being appreciated by their role models. Luckily, George Groves, the current British and Commonwealth super-middleweight champion, received the honour, as he was admired by his all-time favourite boxing star Oscar de la
Hoya.
Groves was able to defeat Francisco Sierra in San Jose on Saturday, stopping him in the sixth round. Although Groves suffered an awful cut, he went on proving his mettle.
Defeating Sierra was a big achievement for Groves, and the way he did it was widely appreciated. Oscar de la Hoya, former six-weight world champion and the owner of Golden Boy Promotions, came up saying, “Groves, a star is born…I do want to see more of George
Groves.”
Groves was delighted to hear De la Hoya’s comments, he replied, “There is loads of room for improvement, but for me the main thing was to come out here, get some solid rounds under my belt, do a job properly - and hopefully win over some support.”
“This fighter had some support but I think in the end I won over a few fans and Golden Boy were very impressed and that was my main objective,” he added.
It should be noted here that the cut Groves sustained during his fight with Sierra is quite a serious one, and it would be hindering his way for a match in September.
For now, Groves is under recovery and he will not be fighting anytime soon. He is quite excited to know that his promoter Frank Warren and his all-time hero Oscar de la Hoya are happy with his performance.
With this victory, George Groves has once again proven the fact that he can overpower more or less any opponent in the division. Although he is quite young and has to go head to head with some of the top-notch fighters of the division to prove his mettle,
he still believes he has achieved enough to be proud of himself.
Groves next fight is not known yet but surely it will not be a rematch against Sierra, as the latter suffered a gruesome victory and will not be stepping in the ring against Groves again.
