George Groves reckons David Haye gave tough time to Wladimir Klitschko – Boxing news
The Saint, George Groves, who is currently managed and trained by David Haye, has said that the former WBA world heavyweight champion Haye gave a tough time to the IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight champion, Wladimir Klitschko.
The Haye-Wladimir highly anticipated unification bout for the heavyweight titles was held last Saturday, July 2, 2011 at the Imtech Arena in Hamburg, Germany in front of a crowd of over 60,000 people.
The 30-year-old brash Londoner, Haye, made a lot of promises ahead of the bout but he couldn’t fulfil them in the ring, as Dr. Steelhammer, Wladimir Klitschko, secured a unanimous points’ victory over him to unify himself in the heavyweight division.
However, the unbeaten super middleweight prospect Groves reckons Haye, who lost his WBA world heavyweight championship belt, gave Wladimir a pretty tough time.
Though Groves admitted it was one of the best performances from Klitschko, he said Haye put up a good show and provided everyone with a lot of entertainment.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “I think David was up against it.  Although he had made bold claims before the fight he got everyone excited and took us on a great journey.  It was the best Wladimir Klitschko has boxed for a long time and David
was really up against it.  He looked like he shook him a few times but couldn’t get near him because Wlad was just too good.”
Haye, who added a second defeat to his career, was seen losing his balance at times during the fight and therefore could not land his Hayemaker.
Groves however believes it could have been a different story if Haye had been able to follow with a few more punches after landing the first one.
“Wlad was always able to either escape the first attack and hold or come back himself.  When David did land Wlad looked nervous and held.  If David had followed up the second phase (of attack) it would have been a different story,” said Groves.
Let’s see whether Haye gets a chance to avenge his defeat against the 6 ft 6.5” Ukrainian giant or not.
