George Groves thumbs down title-bout with Robert Stieglitz due to severe back injury – Boxing News
George Groves, the Commonwealth (British Empire) and BBBC British super middleweight champion, who was scheduled to take on Robert Stieglitz, the current WBO super middleweight champion, has finally pulled himself out of the bout due to an inadvertent injury
sustained during the training session in Cyprus.
According to the details, this will be the second bout which Groves has thumbed down because of the back injury that has been creating problems for the British proud since last year.
Groves requested for the cancellation of his bout with Kenny Anderson which was scheduled to take place in March, 2012. His request was duly accepted and the bout was cancelled altogether.
After that Groves, who was convinced that he is recuperating from the injury, was arranged in a championship bout against Robert, a bout in which the German’s WBO gold was on the line.
But according to the recent tidings and comments put forth by George himself in front of the media, the May 5, 2012 showdown will not take place instead George will return to his rehabilitation schedule and will most probably make a comeback against Kenny
Anderson for the second time on June 30, 2012.
George, 24, has made quite a reputation in the division and proudly resides at Britain’s third and world’s 13th rank. He has been in a total 14 bouts and has never lost even a single one.
In addition, the young lad is denoted as one of the best pounders in the division and has nailed 11 of his total opponents by knockout. The Briton, also known as ‘The Saint’, boasts wins over many big names such as Paul Smith, James DeGale and others.
George grabbed the Commonwealth gold after collecting a sixth-round technical knockout win over Charles Adamu and became the BBBC super middleweight champion after nailing James via majority decision in his favour.
Groves, gloomy at the cancellation of the bout, commented, “I am sorry to have to announce that I won’t be boxing on May 5.” While revealing the details, the surging young Briton remarked, “I have picked up an injury in the build up to this fight. We tried
to work through it but soon realised I wouldn’t be able to perform the training needed to prepare for this fight.”
The disheartened George further added, “After coming back to London immediately and seeking medical advice I hope that this problem will be sorted soon and will only be a short delay.”
The orthodox Groves promoter, Frank Warren, informed that the bout, if not now, will definitely take place at some new date in near future. Frank remarked, “Once George is fit a new date will be rescheduled as George is the mandatory challenger.”
Groves will now most probably take on Kenny Anderson and will try to end his feud once and for all. The details of the bout are not yet available and will be released with the passage of time.
