George Groves to fight Robert Stieglitz for the WBO title – Boxing News
Surprisingly, George Groves just got his title shot at the WBO super middleweight title on May 5 against Robert Stieglitz, the reigning champion. The fight came into the scene after Kenny Anderson, who was scheduled to face Groves, cited back injury problems.
Since their fight was called off, Kenny Anderson was selected as Groves’ new opponent.
Even though Groves got his shot, many analysts are of the view that it is too early for a boxer who has just boxed 14 times professional to get a title shot. George Groves is on an unbeaten streak, which gives him a light weight, yet his short career does
not make him worthy enough to challenge the champion. Critics have already cited that Groves should have opted for the European title first and then for the World title.
Talking about George’s upcoming fight, Kenny Anderson, who was in line to fight Groves, showed dissent. He said that Groves had agreed to fight him and that by doing this Groves is disregarding their verbal agreement. He said, “That should be the case but
I’ve heard he could fight for the world title so all eyes will be watching what he does next. The bottom line is that this is a joke. He is supposed to have an injury so he should prove it to the Board of Control. If he is lying and has a world title fight
lined up then the Board of Control should take the title off him so I can fight someone else.”
He added, “I know he is talking rubbish and made this story up. He is scared to fight me and I will be watching what the authorities do over this but they need to take action if he doesn’t fight me.”
Groves plans on vacating his British title to fight for the world title. If that happens, then probably Anderson’s complain will be washed away and he will get the chance to fight someone else. For now, the bout between Groves and Stieglitz is scheduled
for May 5 and will be televised on BoxNation, featuring Frankie Gavin on the undercard.
