George Karl to evaluate health before returning next year
Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl is in the final year of his contract with the team, and like their superstar Carmelo Anthony, the veteran head coach does not know if he will still be
with the Nuggets next season.
According to Karl, who is still recovering from throat and neck cancer that caused him to miss Denver’s play-offs campaign last season, he will still evaluate his condition next summer before
he’ll decide whether he will return to coach or just focus on his recovery.
“At the end of the year, if my health is more important, then I'll walk away from the game of basketball. I'm not saying that's what I want. But I'm not saying that I haven't thought about
that more than any time in my life.”
The 59-year-old coach also clarified that his coaching career will not depend on what the new Nuggets’ front office will do next summer. Whether they will offer a new contract or not, Karl’s
priority is still his health, and if he will not receive an offer from the Nuggets, he believes that he will get the attention of other NBA teams.
“So, I don't think what the front office decides matters a lot to me, because as much as they're evaluating me and what they want to do with me, I'm probably evaluating what I want to do
with me."
And when he was asked about his current condition, Karl said that he’s definitely feeling better, although he can’t shout instructions to his players during the game, but his assistant coaches
were able to do a great job in performing some of his roles.
‘I'm fired up. I think I have great people behind me. I've got great support,” said Karl. “But there are still a lot of steps. There's some hurdles I've got to jump through, there's some
hoops I've got to jump through.”
Karl, who is in his 23rd year of his coaching career, is nearing the 1000-win mark that has only been accomplished by six coaches in NBA history.
