George Karl wants the Denver Nuggets to play at an even faster pace – NBA Update
Denver Nuggets coach George Karl plans to adapt to an even faster system in the coming season as he looks to mentor what was undoubtedly NBA’s fastest team last season.
In a recent interview, Karl shed light on his strategy for the coming season.
“I’ve never seen it be that successful in the NBA but I think the big thing for us is who is going to commit to playing fast. We talked about it and last year we did a good job at it but there’s no way I want to slow down. I want
to try to prove the world wrong that you can run and win in the NBA and you can win big if you keep running. The problem is can you run for 82 games every minute, every possession of every game?”
The Nuggets employed the run and gun style of play last time and finished strongly by making it to the first round of the playoffs. Up against the Mighty Los Angeles Lakers, they gritted out a seventh game, before finally bowing
out.
Now Karl wants to further improve on their already fast paced style. This is bound to make the Nuggets an even more interesting team to watch and having Andre Iguodala only improves their chances for the coming season.
The key to this fast paced style lies with their ability to run in transition and convert their defence into offense. The Nuggets struggled in protecting their rim last season, finishing as the team which allowed the second highest
points per game. Iguodala is known as one of the best perimeter defenders in the league and being the star player, he can be the lead, the Nuggs need to follow.
However as exciting as this fast paced style may sound, it also has a similar chance of failing as running the game at such a high pace on a consistent basis is always very tough to sustain. The substitutions will need to be watched
throughout games if they want to have a successful run at the style known as ‘The System’ made famous by Paul Westhead in the mid 1980’s.
