George Morgan, Liam Broady move to the second round of Boys’ Singles – Wimbledon Championships 2011
George Morgan defeats Teodor Nicolae Marin 6-4, 4-6, 6-1
Great Britain’s George Morgan survived a second set scare to rally past Teodor Nicolae Marin of Romania in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the first round of the boys’ single event at the Wimbledon Championships in London on Monday.
It took the Brit just under two hours to oust his opponent in a tough clash.
Morgan broke the Romanian in the ninth game of the first set to capture it 6-4. The British capitalised on both break point opportunities he created on Marin’s serve and managed to save six of the seven break points he faced on
his own serve in the first set.
Marin fought back and needed a single break of serve in the second set to clinch it 6-4. The Romanian won 83 percent of the first service points and hit a single ace in the second set. Marin troubled the British with his steady
returns, claiming 40 percent of the receiving points in the second set.
After losing a close second set, Morgan crushed the Romanian in the final set, dropping only one game and breaking his opponent three times to seal the set 6-1.
The British, seeded tenth at the event, is drawn to face Sean Berman of USA in the second round.
Liam Broady beats Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-2
Joining Morgan in the second round, compatriot Liam Broady battled past Nick Kyrgios of Australian in three sets 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-2 in the first round. The match lasted for an hour and 42 minutes.
Broady broke the Australian in the fourth game of the first set and held his serve in the next game to race to a 4-1 lead. The British served out the set at 5-3. Broady clinched 100 percent of the net approach points in the first
set.
In the second set, Broady and Kyrgios exchanged a break of serve in the first twelve games and equalised the score at 6-6, forcing a tie-break. The Australian dominated the tie-break, capturing it 7-3. Kyrgios converted the only
break point he received on Broady’s serve and saved one of the two break points on his own serve in the second set.
Broady regained the lost momentum in the third set as he thrashed the Australian, breaking him twice to capture the set 6-2. The British won twelve of the sixteen net approach points in the third set.
The fifteenth seed is slated to face Mathias Bourgue of France in the second round.
