George Morgan edges past Adam Pavlasek into Boys' Singles semi-final – US Open 2011
Seeded at number 10 in the tournament, George Morgan of the Great Britain, continued his brilliant form at the US Open Boys’ Singles, outplaying the unseeded Czech competitor, Adam Pavlasek, in the quarter-final round on Friday
afternoon.
Being played on the Court 8 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, the two teenagers put up an amazing contest to provide good entertainment to the
local crowd.
The Briton took two hours and seven minutes of play to wrap up a three-set victory at 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4, to book a berth in the semi-final draws of the last Grand Slam tournament of the current year. Morgan was off to a sloppy start
in the competition, dropping the opener in the tie breaker round, but made a magnificent recovery to come out as the winner in the end.
Despite of a poor serve of merely 42 per cent and coughing 10 double faults in the matchup, Morgan took the better of his opponent by reeling off 42 out of 50 first serve points. Pavlasek lagged behind with 36 out of his 47 first
serve points in the game and finished the contest on the losing side in the third set.
The Czech competitor had his chances in the contest but he squandered most of them after a brilliant start in the opening set. Pavlasek had a total of five break opportunities in the matchup but converted just one of them to finish
on the losing side in the end. He fought brilliantly in the opener, moving neck-to-neck with the 10th seed to drag the set in to a tie breaker round. Morgan collapsed in the decider and secured only three points to let Pavlasek away with the first
set at 7-6(3).
Tide turned in the very next set, with the Briton nailing an early serve break to lead 3-1. Morgan held lead till the end, with Pavlasek frittering away a crucial break opportunity in the fourth game, to pocket the second set at
6-4.
The Briton continued with his winning momentum in the final set and just one break point conversion in the fifth game proved sufficient for him to wrap up victory at 6-4 to get a berth in the semi-finals. Morgan will take on his
13th seeded fellow compatriot, Oliver Golding in the semi-final clash for a place in the final of the US Open on Saturday.
