George Morgan edges past Julien Cagnina in Boys’ Singles opening round – US Open 2011
10th seed in the Boys’ Singles draws, George Morgan of Great Britain went through some tough times before he finally overturned his unseeded Belgian opponent, Julien Cagnina, in the opening round of the US Open on Monday
afternoon.
The contest was staged on the Court 6 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, with the two teenagers battling it hard to come out as the winner.
Morgan took two hours and nineteen minutes to settle the final scores at 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2, getting a place in the second round of the Grand Slam tournament. It was an evenly poised matchup, with both contestants putting in best
of their efforts to remain alive in the competition. Cagnina played brilliantly in the opening set to get the early breakthrough in the contest but failed to sustain his winning momentum in the later parts of the game to let his opponent fly away with victory.
Both players delivered 58 per cent of their serve on target but Morgan excelled over his opponent by bagging 41 out of 57 first serve points in the contest. The Briton converted six of his 11 break opportunities in the matchup,
while Cagnina cashed in just three of his six break points to finish on the losing side in the end.
The opener was stuffed with quality tennis action, with the two contestants trading a number of serve breaks to get the early advantage in the game. Cagnina drew the first blood in the third game to get to 3-1 lead but Morgan frittered
away his advantage with a break point conversion in the sixth game. A further exchange of break points from both players took the first set into a tie breaker round but the Briton crumbled under pressure to let the Belgian take the opening set at 7-6(4).
Morgan came right back in the game with two timely serve breaks in the second set to level the matchup with one set a piece. He carried on his winning momentum in the final set as well and stung two straight serve breaks to race
away to 4-0 lead. Morgan closed out the third set at 6-2 to get through to the second round of the US Open, where he will face the local boy, Connor Farren, for a place in the third round.
