George North shocked at Wales call up
Welsh wing George North admitted that he was shocked to learn that he had been called into the Wales squad for the autumn internationals against Australia, Fiji, South Africa and New Zealand.
The 18-year-old has played some superb rugby for the Scarlets this season and is proving to be a pivotal player for the Welsh side.
"I just couldn't believe it when I got the text so I got my agent to phone-up and check it was for real. I thought it was someone playing a prank at first," said the Scarlets back.
The player has featured in five of the Scarlets competitive games so far this season and has scored four tries.
Welsh coach Warren Gatland called North into the squad after his impressive form so far this season. The young Scarlets wing will link up with fellow club-mates Stephen Jones, Rob McCusker, Jonathan Davies, Tavis Knoyle and Matthew Rees.
North admitted that the international call up had not sunk in and said, "It's amazing; such an honour and I was really surprised. My parents were over the moon for me."
Gatland believes that the experience that North will gain during the autumn series will be invaluable and this is something that the Scarlets wing agrees with.
“I'm just really grateful and delighted with the chance to be in the Wales camp and I'm really looking forward to the experience,” he added.
North admitted that he had not even considered making the Welsh squad and was only concentrating on his club side until he received word from the Welsh Rugby Union.
"I'm obviously delighted; it's been such a great season for me so far with the Scarlets.
"They've handed me the chance to play right from the beginning of the season,” said the Welshman. “I've worked hard on my game and really concentrated on improving since joining the senior squad in the pre-season.”
