  1. I was so sad about "George Washington" too. It had been a great day up until then.I am happy for "Curlin".He ran a great race.

  2. I didn't think the European horses would do as well as everyone was touting them this year, but this is really disappointing.  It's even sadder given the Gretchen and Roy Jackson connections.

    :o(

  3. Curlin is my absolute favorite horse and I was thrilled to see him win so impressively.  I never expected Street Sense to win. I hadn't seen him do anything impressive since the Kentucky Derby. I saw him at the Travers in Saratoga this summer and, even though he won, he came very close to being beaten by Grasshopper.  And, later he was beaten by Hard Spun.

I was happy for Hard Spun's 2nd place.  Although I like the horse, I never bet on him because I think his trainer, Larry Jones, is a horribly mean man (at least towards people).  He probably does treat his horses better.  To take Mario Pino off Hard Spun because he moved early in the Preakness was unfair since Pino really had no choice.  CP West was breathing down his neck. But, then to publicly humiliate  Garrett Gomez on TV was horrible.  If you're angry with a jockey's ride, talk to him in private - not in front of all the TV cameras.  I had a longshot bet on Awesome Gem so his third place was great.

But, the joy of the race was ruined for me because of George Washington being put down. I had never heard of him before (I only really started following racing this year), but to take him out of retirement because he wasn't a good stud horse and race him again was cruel.  He raced for many many years.  If he wasn't a good stud horse, he should have just been allowed to hang out with other retired horses in green pastures and enjoy the rest of his days.  That was the life that everyone was hoping Barbaro could have had.

  4. It was very sad to see George Washington put down. George Washington's racing career was pretty good. It was sad to see him not do well in stud. It was exceptionally sad to see him come back to racing and have a horrific end like this. Curlin did an exceptional job in the Classic. I was sad to see Street Sense come in 4th. He worked hard, but he didn't like the track. Curlin held off a game Hard Spun, too! Curlin's amazing! Curlin and Street Sense were my bets today! GO CURLIN!!!

  5. I didn't see the race as I have no access to the Cable channel it was shown on at home - it's 11.30pm here and I should be in bed!

I've just read the news about George Washington online and I am so sorry to hear it - my thoughts are with all of his connections.  Particularly sad for the Jackson's following their loss of Barbaro - they bred GW.

He was an enigmatic, quirky horse, and I loved to watch him run.  The day he won the 2000 Guineas, he took my breath away - he made the other horses look like donkeys.

They always say the brightest stars burn out the fastest.  Rest in peace George.
