George and Lori Hall vie for back-to-back Belmont Stakes victory with My Adonis this year
The list of horses to challenge I’ll Have Another in the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on 9 June, 2012, swelled up, as the 2011 Belmont Stakes winning connections, George and Lori Hall with, Ruler on Ice, will be sending their 3-year-old
colt, My Adonis, to run over a distance of 1 ½ miles at the Big Sandy on 9 June, 2012.
Trained by Kelly J. Breen, My Adonis is most recently exiting a third place finish in the Cananero II Stakes on the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes day at Pimlico to winner, Pretension, who narrowly downed Brimstone Island to win the 1 1/16 mile event in 1 minute
and 45.70 seconds.
The Cananero II Stakes was the only non graded stakes race My Adonis participated in his sophomore season, because being on the Derby trail, the son of Pleasantly Perfect kicked off his 2012 campaign with a run in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes which he lost
to Algorithms in third.
Moving to Aqueduct racetrack from Gulfstream Park, My Adonis nearly caught Hansen in the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes, but the juvenile champion was too good as a closer and hunt down My Adonis to win the 1 1/16 mile event.
The race that omitted all hope of My Adonis featuring in the Kentucky Derby was the Grade 1 Wood Memorial, where at Aqueduct; My Adonis had a troubled trip as he ended up in seventh place to winner, Gemologist.
If George and Lori Hall win back to back Belmont Stakes, then they will become the second connections ever to have achieved this feat since the Meadow Stable registered back to back Belmont Stakes victories with Riva Ridge in 1972 and Secretariat in 1973.
“We came to this decision only a few hours ago,” said Lori Hall. “Over the last seven to 10 days he’s really shown to be eating well and to looking the part. We’ve just kind of kept in the back of our minds that this could be a possibility, and (trainer)
Kelly (Breen) called us today and said, ‘I’m getting that good vibe.’”
