President bush was talking about the situation in georgia, and i have never heard him speak so softly. He seemed subdued. Is he taking the problem so seriously that he wants a peaceful solution or is it that he knows that it is eventually going to lead to a conflict.By the sound of his voice i think its a bad sign.

  1. I think Bush has just realized that being the last remaining superpower doesn't mean we can run the whole world.

Bush came into office wanting to invade Iraq and overthrow Saddam.  He used 9/11 as a justification to do this, not because Iraq had anything to do with 9/11 but because he wanted to do it to begin with.  All his real military experts told him we didn't have enough troops to stabilize Iraq, but he didn't listen to them, instead he listened to the ideologs in the PNAC, the Project for a New American Century, who had made no secret of their desire to take over Iraq, and who were given high positions in the Bush administration.

I think Bush really believed we could plow through Iraq in a few weeks, then go on to Syria and Iran.  Actually, I believed it too, though I didn't approve of the plan.  But the military experts proved right.  We didn't have enough 'boots on the ground' in Iraq and the situation quickly spiraled out of control.

I really think this is why Bush hasn't bombed Iran.  He knows he couldn't get away with it, that bringing Iran into the war would only make things much worse.  He likes to saber-rattle, to talk tough, to threaten Iran, but if he really was going to bomb them he would have done so months ago.  In fact a couple of weeks ago Bush announced he was sending an envoy to negotiate with Iran!  This is something he swore for  years he'd never do, negotiate with 'terrorists'.

So now it's Russia.  We have no chance at all of doing enough damage to Russia to convince them to leave Georgia alone.  We are impotent!  We will use diplomacy to try to dissuade Putin, and when that doesn't work we will stand back and cluck our tongues and say it's a shame but there's not much we can do.  Which is true enough!  There really is not much we can do.

  2. It's because Bush was totally caught by surprise. And when you're caught totally surprised and unprepared, there's very limited options that you can do. The US is already entangled in two wars, with no clear indication of those wars ending anytime soon. The economy is in downturn, with prospects of real recession in the coming years. Now if the US decides to get involved in a military confrontation with Russia, that will drain the economy even further. The signs are really bad.

  3. Either his thorazine Big Gulp just kicked in or he has been psychologically castrated by realizing Putin has a bigger one (army) than he does.
