  1. Sonny had a bit of a problem with taller fighters.  He had a good solid jab and was probably a slightly better boxer than George was.  Sonny used the jab more than George did.  The problem for Sonny is that he certainly was no speed demon.  In fact, he was awfully slow.

George wasn't very fast either.  However, he has a slight edge in speed here.  Sonny throws straighter punches.   I'd say George has a better chin and this is what would make the difference.

Since both are slow, dynamite punchers, speed wouldn't be much of a factor.   This makes the ability to take the other man's punch become a VERY important factor.  Sonny's jab would certainly allow him to reach, and Floor Forman, probably by round 4.  George has a lot of heart and endurance.   He would get up and survive the round.

Sonny would have his turn to visit the canvas in round 5.  He would not have as easy a time recovering as did George.  George would wind up on his punches.  Sonny, not being a runner, would be right there to receive them.   He would land his own as well.  The difference is that Sonny's chin would give in before George's would.

    Forman by KO in 8

  2. Big time match up.  Fight goes the distance with both hanging on.  Liston win by decision.

  3. when george was an amateur he sparred with sonny and therefore picked up alot of sonny's traits. which george are you talking about, 70's george or 90's george? 70's george had bad stamina, but was much quicker and meaner, so i think he would kayo sonny in 6 rounds, as sonny didnt have the best chin and wouldnt of been able to keep george off him, 90's george had good stamina, but was cumbersome and hesitant, sonny might win a decision or george still might knock him out, its a tossup

  4. Sonny Liston had a granite chin in his prime.  Cleveland Williams clocked him and it's reported that Sonny hardly blinked.  Sonny was a decent boxer and a strong puncher.  George had a good chin but his punching power has been overrated.  Look how many times he knocked Frazier down without keeping him down.  George looped his punches.  I only saw him throw straight bombs a couple of time -- against Ron Lyle and Michael Moorer.  When he did that he pulverized them.

George had serious stamina problems early on when he was physically in his prime.

    Size           Foreman

    Jab            Equal

    Defense    Liston

    Reach        Liston

    Stamina     Liston

    Chin           Liston

    Power        Equal

    Speed        Foreman

    Versatility   Foreman

Until Liston fought Ali, he was indestructable and unbeatable, just as Foreman was years later.  Liston's whole image was ruined by Ali I and particularly Ali II.  If Foreman dot come pack for a second career he would be remembered for the Ali fight and would not be so well regarded.

This would be a great fight, but I would go with Liston.  Lyle showed how vulnerable Foreman was to a left hook and Sonny had a great one.  Both were great bombers but Sonny's defense was better.

  5. Foreman no doubt liston did have a good reach but liston could not take the punches that george foreman can give liston would brawl with him and get knocked out by big george foreamn.
