Georges St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck exchange barbs
Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck are scheduled to fight on December 11 in Montreal. The length of time until fight night
has not prevented the two from taking verbal jabs at each other.
The upcoming bout, unlike their first fight in 2007, will be for St-Pierre’s title. Their first fight was a non-title match as St-Pierre had lost the belt to Matt Serra in his previous
fight. St-Pierre defeated Koscheck by unanimous decision.
Since that time Koscheck has mad a steady climb up the welterweight division rankings. His unanimous decision win over Paul Daley in May of this year earned him the title shot.
The two fighters could not be more different in their personalities. St-Pierre is seen as the reserved, soft-spoken gentleman of MMA while Koscheck comes across as the brash, arrogant,
cocky loudmouth. To use a professional wrestling analogy, St-Pierre would be considered a “babyface” while Koscheck would be the “heel.”
The two fighters recently completed filming of the television show “The Ultimate Fighter” where they served as opposing coaches. In a conference call to promote the show the two fighters
exchanged barbs.
Koscheck told St-Pierre he was “wasting a lot of his money and a lot his time” working on his striking. Koscheck figures St-Pierre will be reluctant to do anything but wrestle, “I know
that you’re just a wrestler, and that’s all you want to do.”
For his part, St-Pierre had this to say, “I was with Josh Koscheck, so that was hard. He’s very arrogant and I don’t like to be close to this guy. But I didn’t have a choice. It was a
few weeks where I had to be close to him.”
When Koscheck heard of St-Pierre’s comments he was delighted, “That’s awesome…you just made my day.” Koscheck also offered, “I know I got under Georges’ skin and that he’s even admitted
it in interviews. I kind of like that.”
While Koscheck thinks that being under Georges’ skin gives him an advantage, St-Pierre sees things differently, “it gives me more motivation to train hard.”
Another factor in this fight is the overwhelming support St-Pierre will have in his hometown of Montreal, a fact that Koscheck sees as a positive on his side of the ledger. “I love the
fact I get to go into Montreal and beat up Georges in his hometown. All the pressure’s on him.”
Expect to hear much more from both sides as St-Pierre vs. Koscheck fight date nears.
