Georges St-Pierre believes fight against Diaz is what fans want – UFC News
UFC welterweight titlist Georges St-Pierre made his comeback last month to once again steal the spotlight from others in the division. He was being scheduled for a super-fight against middleweight champion Anderson Silva just when he declined, saying he
wants to fight arch rival Nick Diaz first.
GSP got his call and the UFC confirmed his match against Nick Diaz, overlooking number one contender Johny Hendricks.
When asked, GSP asserted that he has so many challengers lined up but he can only face one at a time.
“It's kind of an awkward situation, I know, but I want to fight Diaz,” said GSP in a media interaction during The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
“I cannot split myself in three pieces.”
When asked about Johny Hendricks, GSP iterated that he does feel bad for the number one contender but he cannot do much about it.
“I do feel bad for Johnny Hendricks. But put yourself in my shoes, it's the big fight, this fight is waiting to happen for a long time, and you know, its a big fight, that's what people want to say. Everyone wants to fight me know, it's crazy. I cannot split
myself in half. If I took another fight, the others, they both would have complained, what do they want me to do, you know.”
The UFC scheduled GSP’s showdown against Diaz for UFC 158 on March 16. The event will take place in Montreal at the Bell Centre. GSP will be defending his title against Diaz while Rory MacDonald will lock horns with former interim champion Carlos Condit.
GSP asserted that he hopes nothing goes ‘crazy’ that would put an end to the fight, as he knows how injuries and drug taking has become a norm with mixed martial artists.
For now, Georges St-Pierre wants to prove he is the king of welterweight by defeating every possible opponent in the division, before facing Anderson Silva. When asked, GSP asserted that the fight can happen but he needs to time to think over it.
According to GSP, a fight against Silva should be meaningful to him and not just about money.
