Georgia leads NCAA Division 1 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship: Day one – Swimming news
Day one of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship ended with the lead of Georgia with 129 points, against 122 points of University of Southern California (USC). Stanford is on the third spot
with 116 points, ahead of Cal Berkeley with 115 points.
The championship saw great performances, as the NCAA record for 500-yard freestyle was improved by Georgia’s Allison Schmitt in 4:32.71 minutes.
The day started with the commencement of the 200m freestyle relay, where the Cal Berkeley team comprising of Hannah Wilson, Colleen Fotsch, Erica Dagg and Liv Jensen dominated the event in a time of 1:27.36 minutes against their 1:27.96 minutes effort in
the preliminary rounds. They were followed by Arizona team in the second place in 1:28.02 minutes and Texas in the third place in 1:28.06 minutes.
The next event was the 500-yard freestyle, where Georgia’s junior Allison Schmitt stunned the audience with her dominating performance in the preliminary rounds in a time of 4:32.71 minutes, against Towson’s senior, Meredith Budner’s 4:35.58 minutes effort.
Schmitt then proved her eligibility for the gold medal in the finals in a time of 4:34.20 minutes, against Budner’s 4:34.56 minutes. They were followed by Arizona’s Alyssa Anderson for the third place in a time of 4:35.41 minutes.
The third event of the day, the 200-yard Individual Medley was ruled by USC’s Katinka Hosszu in 1:53.39 minutes, ahead of Stanford’s Maya Dirado and Texas’s junior Karlee Bispo in 1:54.66 and 1:55.70 minutes, respectively.
The 50-yard freestyle was the fourth event of the day, where the top-three finishers touched the wall in less than 22.00 seconds. The event was secured by Aurburn’s Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace, as she met the expectations of the crowd in a time of 21.38 seconds.
She was followed by Cal Berkeley’s junior Liv Jensen and Arizona’s Margo Geer, in a time of 21.50 and 21.93 seconds, respectively.
The fifth event was the one-metre diving, whose record is held by Anastasia Pozdniakova of Houston with a score of 356.20. The event was conquered by Minnesota’s Kelci Bryant with 349.65 points, ahead of Missouri’s Loren Figuerroa and Stanford’s Margaret
Hostage, who scored 335.30 and 327.65 points, respectively.
The day ended with the 400-yard medley relay, which was again dominated by Cal Berkeley’s team comprising of Cindy Tran, Caitlin, Amanda Sims and Liv Jensen in a time of 3:28.53 minutes. They were followed by the team of USC and Arizona in a time of 3:29.82
and 3:30.52 minutes, respectively.
