  1. Georgia sent troops into Georgian territory to put down a revolt by separatists. Russian troops, who want Georgia as part of Russia,

then went in to Georgia's  South Ossetia province and Ahkbian province, ostensibly to stop the fighting.

This was, pure and simple an invasion of Georgia by Putin's Russia.

Putin wants to rebuild the soviet union.

Bush did try to get Georgia to hold off on sending troops in to put down the revolt but he was not succesful.

  2. georgia has A LOT of oil & the US has been selling georgia a lot of weapons over the years. essentially the US has an invested interest in helping Georgia.

and Georgia didnt start it, they just didnt want to be part of russia. read up on the whole situation. Russia is a big country wouldnt it be beneficial to back the bigger side? russia isnt a country full of rainbows and bunny rabbits. thats why america is getting involved. poor condaleeza, shes got her work cut out for her

  3. Pray tell how did Georgia start a war by taking actions within their sovereign territory?  The FACT that 1200 Russian tanks illegally crossed the border in a matter of hours proves they were planning an invasion already.

  4. trying to be unbiased:

when the USSR broke up into many smaller nations, the biggest being Russia, many Russians were not to happy about it.

Due to this general unhappiness, conflicts arose in many parts on the Russian borders, especially with previous-USSR nations such as Georgia.

Two such areas are Abkhazia and South Ossetia (the one currently in focus)

So now, Russia consider South Ossetia and Abkhazia to be independent nations (just like Kosovo managed to declare itself independent from Serbia)

But georgia considers them to be its states (Just like Serbia considered Kosovo to be its state)

Now Russia develops "ties" with the de-facto independent South Ossetia and send in its "peacekeepers". Basically they get some control over a disputed territory.

Georgia does not like this and enters South Ossetia (attacking peacekeepers etc.) It says this move is legitimate because it has entered its own land.

But Russia claims Georgia has invaded an independent nation (South Ossetia) and thus moves to help its ally (South Ossetia) in the war against the oppressor Georgia.

Basically this is Russia's response to the independence of Kosovo. Russia did not support that move and the USA did (mainly so that the USA could have a strategic ally in the Balkans where the USA could house a military base).

Now Russia has exploited a technicality (just like the US did many years ago when they managed to get NATO involved in Kosovo) and is pressing Georgia more for symbolic reasons than to get actual land.

The US is interested in Georgia as a strategic ally, possible military base location and a source of oil. So, under the pretext of supporting freedom and democracy it supports Georgia.

  5. That Russia pushed Georgia to the point they had to act, is not a release of culpability on the part of Russia, They are the agressor.

You don't act as "peacekeepers" and then give everyone Russian citizenship and tell them to come and bring their land with them.

If they are now Russians...they should go to Russia.

Could you imagine US granting the citizens of Kaliningrad US citizensip and taking the land too?

I'm sure that would go over big in the Kremlin.

  6. Because there's an oil pipeline that goes through Georgia that the US is interested in.

  7. Because that's propaganda. Georgia was protecting itself against rebels in S. Ossetia.  Geogia did not start the war.

  8. I would tell you to stop buying into the propaganda, but not even the liberal media is reporting that.  So I guess you should stop buying into the conspiracy theorist.

You can keep saying it over and over again, but the fact is, South Ossetia is a part of Georgia.

jakeb:  I don't deny what you are saying.  Just never heard of it.  Please provide evidence of this so we can see for ourselves.  The only other thing that is odd about what you say is that even Russia isn't claming that is the reason they went in.

  9. How did they start the war?

Ossetia isn't recognized as a sovereign country by the international community..they are considered part of Georgia

  10. They we're provoked, by Russian "peace keepers", they ramped up the provocation. Don't be fooled by the genocide clause, which is pretty much the reason the US gave for intervening in Kosovo against Russian demands. S. Ossetia although it want to be in Russia, by majority is a state of Georgia and they didn't want the iron curtain drawing nearer and nearer. It was foolish of the Georgians, they should have called for help before they went on such a hasty action. But to say they started it is untrue.

  11. Why hasnt the US had any voice in Darfur??????  There's been hundreds of thousands die there is that less important?????

  12. How is it some of you think it is ok for a country to be invaded because they are putting down a revolt. The Old Soviet Union is following history as did the Romans. They moved their citizens into the occupied territory and try to take it over they have done it since the revolution in 1918.

If you have not been paying attention they have moved into this country and are in our government trying to do the same thing here.

Just look at who is running for President and what hate they show for this country.

    Pay close attention.

    History repeats it’s self.

We as a nation are at a point in time where we were 70 years ago. History appears to be repeating itself. I know you know the history of what Hitler did.

In brief, Hitler launched his own expansionist drive with the annexation of Austria in March 1938. The way was clear: Mussolini supported him; and the British and French, distraught by German rearmament, accepted Hitler's claim that the status of Austria was an internal German affair. The U.S. had severely impaired its ability to act against aggression by passing a neutrality law that prohibited material assistance to all parties in foreign conflicts.

Then in September 1938 Hitler threatened war to annex the western border area of Czechoslovakia, the Sudetenland and its 3.5 million ethnic Germans. The British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain initiated talks that culminated at the end of the month in the Munich Pact, by which the Czechs, on British and French urging, relinquished the Sudetenland in return for Hitler's promise not to take any more Czech territory. Chamberlain believed he had achieved "peace for our time”, but the word Munich soon implied abject and futile appeasement.

Less than six months later, in March 1939, Hitler seized the remainder of Czechoslovakia. Alarmed by this new aggression and by Hitler's threats against Poland, the British government pledged to aid that country if Germany threatened its independence. France already had a mutual defense treaty with Poland.

So, keep your eyes open and watch what happens next. The Russians have their eyes on other countries as well.

  13. Hmm, I don't remember hearing anything about Georgia invading Russia.  I think you have your facts confused.

  14. how do YOU know? were you there? or do you just blindly believe everything you see on TV?

  15. It is true that Georgia attacked first. They have been launching sneak attacks on russian outposts for years. The media has ignored this and is biased. USA is only intrested in Georgia due to it's strategic location,
