Georgie’s Angel completes her Saratoga assignment by winning the Schuylerville Stakes on the opening day of the meet
It was a stroll in the park for the highly favoured Georgie’s Angel who won the $100,000 Grade 3 Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga’s opening day on 23 July.
The filly provided trainer Todd Pletcher a win in the Schuylerville Stakes' six furlongs event.
Veteran jockey, John Velazquez, guided the filly with confidence and in impressive fashion to victory.
The daughter of Bellamy Road out of Lalka by Dynaformer, sprinted with great spirit, as she ripped the course apart, completing the six furlongs dash in a mere 1 minute and 10.68 seconds.
On her travels she defeated True Feelings by 1 ½ lengths, Force de La Nature rolled in third.
The 14 to 1 sent Vukovar set up a blistering pace right from the outset which needed some getting to as the filly made some impressive fractions in the early part of the race.
Georgie’s Angel who was sent at 4 to 5 broke from the outside post quickly settled into third position, following the lot in the third quarter.
Vukovar lost her lead position as Gypsy Robin took over, who came in seventh in the Grade 2 Queen Mary Stakes recently in the Royal Ascot.
Gypsy Robin towed the field but not for long as she fell victim to Georgie’s Angel blistering pace, who easily took over her under mild drive from jockey John Velazquez.
Sheffer Racing Stable owned two-year-old filly, Georgie’s Angel landed her second career race, who is now 2 of 2 with earnings of $95,820.
The Todd Pletcher trained filly broke her maiden on 4 July 2011 at Churchill Downs on dirt and, under Jockey J Castanon, she covered 4 ½ furlongs in 51.23 seconds.
The closest that came to challenge Georgie’s Angel was Anthony Dutrow trained 2 year old filly, True Feelings. Under jockey J Rose, the filly kept nagging around as she finally decided to give her all from the outside as Georgie’s Angel was heading game
way through mid stretch.
Winning owner and Red Sox fan Ronnie Sheffer revealed that the filly was named after late George Steinbrenner who owned Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees.
He also revealed that when Georgie’s Angel broke her maiden it was 4 July, this so happens to be George Steinbrenner’s birthday as well.
Trainer Todd Pletcher was awfully happy with the filly’s performance, but he added that he was expecting such a strong performance from Georgie’s Angel, as she always looks good when she trains and breezes.
He also revealed that her next likely start would be in the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes on 4 September. It was a quick comeback after the Churchill Downs race to Saratoga, and now her connections will have her well rested for the next race.
