Geraint Jones impresses upon Kevin Pietersen to fire
Kevin Pietersen’s former teammate Geraint Jones has suggested the prolific English batsman to play the kind of cricket he used to play at the start of his international career in 2005 if England are to lift their first coveted trophy in 36 years.
“In the World Cup you need your big guns to fire,” said Jones. “Kevin did that for the Twenty20 World Cup triumph last year and will no doubt look to do the same this time.”
Recalling the time when the South Africa-born had joined the England national side in 2004-05, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kent-c802 wicketkeeper said that Pietersen first used to build his innings and then used his power. He urged Pietersen to go back to the same strategy.
“I was in the side when he came into the one-day team in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 in 2005 and he got three hundreds in the series,” said Jones, member of victorious England squad that lifted the Ashes urn in 2005. “It was exciting to watch him play there, the way he
went about it. He built his innings and then used his power. I think that's potentially an area he needs to get back to.”
Jones insisted that Pietersen should bat for long and if he does that, the former England wicketkeeper was confident that England would win the match no matter setting or chasing a target.
He also wanted the England Team Director Andy Flower and team captain Andrew Strauss to talk to the flamboyant batsman, tell him his importance in the side, and give him confidence for doing that.
Eoin Morgan, another big gun of England, was ruled out of the ICC World Cup 2011 due to a finger injury which he sustained during the fourth One Day International against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 and Jones considers it as a massive blow for England. He described Morgan
as a match-winning player for England and said that his absence adds to Pietersen’s responsibility in the mega event.
Jones was happy over wicketkeeper batsman Matt Prior’s inclusion into the side and said that he was one of the best wicketkeeper batsmen of the world in his opinion.
