Geraint Thomas happy with his Giro performance
Geraint Thomas came close to the victory during the 8.7 kilometre stage 1 of the Giro d’ Italia.
The 25-year-old rode brilliantly throughout the race but could not match the likes of Team BMC cyclist, Taylor Phinney.
The American registered his first Grand Tour stage victory after finishing the race in a fastest time o f10 minutes and 26 seconds.
Geraint Thomas finished 9 seconds behind at the second position while Alex Rasmussen of Team Garmin-Barracuda occupied the third spot finishing further four seconds behind.
Geraint was happy with his second place finish at the opening stage of the race and admired Phinney’s performance during the event.
He briefed, "I think I measured it pretty well. I tried to carry my speed through the corners, one or two I could have gone a bit faster but losing by nine seconds I can't blame it on a couple of corners".
"Coming from the track, there's a temptation to try and sprint fast out of those corners but that would obviously take a lot out of me so it was all about judging it correctly which I think I did”.
The 25-year-old picked his first victory of the 2012 season at the World Championships and also secured the opening stage of the Tour de Romandie.
He finished second at the Madison World Championships along with his team-mate Ben Swift.
Geraint holds as many as four Grand Tour appearances under his name including three Tour de France and one Giro d’ Italia participation to his credit.
He finished at the 31st overall position during the most recent edition of the French Grand Tour and is currently trying his luck at the first Grand Tour race of the season, the Giro d’ Italia 2012.
Steve De Jongh is Team Sky Sporting Director and he is pleased with Thomas’ performance at the Giro d’ Italia 2012.
He noted that Team Sky cyclist rode exceptionally well during the opening stage of the race and he was only unlucky to have missed the top spot.
The 25-year-old currently holds the second overall spot after the stage 2 classifications and the  cyclist is determined to take his performance to the next level for the coming stages of the Giro d’ Italia 2012.
