Geraint Thomas targeting the opening stage of the Giro d’ Italia 2012
Geraint Thomas of Team BMC has noted that the best way to handle the Giro d’ Italia 2012 is to find the correct balance right from the opening stage of the race.
The cyclist briefed that the 8.7 kilometre stage 1 of the race will test the cyclists and will be a real challenge for the overall contenders.
Thomas is enjoying a terrific season and opened his winning account at the Tour de Romandie.
He succeeded during the opening prologue stage of the Tour de Romandie and finished second at the Madison World Championships along with his team-mate Ben Swift.
The 25-year-old is in supreme form ahead of the Giro especially after the stage win at the Tour de Romandie.
He is eyeing the opening stage of the race to register his first victory on Italian turf and will continue his overall classification pursuit for the coming stages of the race.
Thomas cited, “it’s going to be about not getting excited too early on, as I tend to in prologues”.
“Instead I’ll want to keep a steady pace in the first half, and then empty the tank on the last part, so it’s completely empty when I hit the line”.
“I’ve always gone 100 percent in prologues but after Romandie people are talking about me a bit more”.
“It’s a nice little individual target, then the sprint days will be big for me and the team, plus there’s the team time trial,” he concluded.
Thomas started his professional crusade with Team Recycling.co.uk in 2006 and joined Team Barloworld for 2007-09 seasons.
He accepted an offer from Team Sky for the 2010 season and helped the team with numerous victories in the past seasons.
The 25-year-old holds a total number of four Grand Tour appearances in his bag including the Giro d’ Italia and three Tour de France participations to his credit.
He secured the 118th overall spot at the Giro d’ Italia 2008 and occupied the 140th, 67th and the 31st position at the 2007, 2010 and 2011 editions of the Tour de France.
It will be interesting to see, if Geraint can find the right balance during the opening stage of the first Grand Tour race of the season.
