Geraint Thomas to remain silent after his coach Shane Sutton’s comments
Geraint Thomas’s decision to skip the Tour de France and try his luck at the home Olympics was questioned by Team GB coach Shane Sutton.
In return, the cyclist has decided to avoid any serious confrontation with the team coach and has briefed that he has no issues with whatever is said by his coach.
Geraint told Wales Online, "Shane had told me already what he had said in the interview. I have known him since I was 14 and he is a straight-talking guy".
“There are no secrets between us and that is a great way to be. But I am doing things for the right reasons because the Olympics is something I’ve grown up wanting to win”.
Thomas helped the British team during the 2012 UCI Track World Championships in Melbourne. He overcame the Australian arch-rival and claimed the gold medal in the team pursuit last week.
Geraint was part of the strong British line-up, consisting of Edward Clancy, Peter Kennaugh and Andrew Tennant.
The British side finished the 4 kilometre Men’s Team Pursuit race in a fastest time of 0:03:54.485 and claimed the top spot.
Australian team of Glenn O’Shea, Jack Bobridge, Rohan Dennis and Michael Hepburn could not stop Geraint’s team and had to settle for the second position with a total time of 0:03:59.156.
Team New Zealand, Team Russia, Team Spain, Team Belgium, Team Denmark, Team Netherlands, Team Germany and Team Korea achieved the next 8 positions.
Thomas has already participated at the Tour de France on three different occasions, 2007, 2010 and 2011.
He finished at the 31st overall position and occupied the third spot during the second stage of the race.
The cyclist briefed that the main reason behind his participation at the 2012 Olympic Games is because of the fact that Olympics came every four years and Tour de France is every year.
“I have always said London was my main 2012 goal and I don’t want to jeopardise my chances. The Tour would have done that and would have split my loyalties,” he briefed.
Only time will tell if Thomas can fulfil his dream of representing Great Britain in front of the home crowd.
