Geraint Thomas wins the Tour of Romandie Prologue
Geraint Thomas of Team Sky Procycling shined during the opening stage of the Tour of Romandie.
The cyclist rode brilliantly at the time trial stage of the race and claimed his first victory of the 2012 season.
Team Sky cyclist finished the race in a fastest time of 3 hours, 29 minutes and 43 seconds and grabbed the top podium position.
Thomas launched a perfect attack to restrict Giacomo Nizzolo and Mark Cavendish for the second and the third positions.
Michael Rogers, Kristof Vandewalle and Julien Vermote occupied the fourth, the fifth and the sixth positions in the respective order.
Giacomo Nizzolo, Julien Vermote and Michael Matthews were the top three best young riders on the day.
“It’s a nice little win, the team told me I was racing here about 10 days ago so it was great to come over”.
“I always knew that I’d be up there. Fortunately with the weather conditions it played into my hands a bit but there was only really one corner”.
“There’s only so much time you can lose in one corner”.
“I’ll be there to help Cav [Mark Cavendish] in the sprints wherever they come and Bradley is going for the GC as well so I’ll be there to help him wherever I can”.
Thomas started his professional career with Team Recycling.co.uk in 2006 and joined Team Barloworld for 2007-09 seasons.
He penned a deal with Team Sky in 2010 and currently rides with the same team for the third consecutive season.
The 25-year-old had a terrific past season and helped his side with a number of wins with his tremendous performances.
He claimed stages at the Tour de France, Tour of Britain and secured an overall victory at the Bayern-Rundfahrt 2011.
Geraint also finished first at the 2012 Team Pursuit World Championships and teamed up with Ben Swift to help Great Britain with a second place finish at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships.
He is now dominating the stage 1 classifications with a lead of 5 seconds over Giacomo Nizzolo and 6 seconds over Mark Cavendish.
Thomas is now eyeing the 184.5 kilometre stage 2 of the Tour of Romandie to strengthen his lead at the overall classifications.
